In early 2024, the much-loved Academy Theatre in Gainford, County Durham suffered significant damage following a severe internal flood. A burst water pipe in a neighbouring property caused extensive damage throughout the building—impacting the stage, seating, floors, lighting and dressing rooms. For a venue so central to the village's cultural life, the loss was deeply felt by both the drama club and the local community.
As repair works got underway, Armitage & Wilson were proud to be involved in the theatre’s refurbishment, helping to restore warmth and comfort to this cherished space through a number of bespoke furniture pieces.
We were commissioned to carefully restore the damaged theatre seating which originated from the Hippodrome Theatre.
Working closely with the refurbishment team, we ensured all items were delivered and installed in line with the project timeline—ready for the theatre’s reopening.
This was more than just a fit-out—it was part of a wider effort to bring a vital community space back to life. We’re proud to have contributed to the revival of the Academy Theatre and can’t wait to see the curtain rise once again in 2025.
